Deoghar peda goes global, eyes GI tag

The very name Deoghar conjures up the image of an imposing temple of Lord Shiva, the serpent God of the Hindus, and hundreds of kiosks dotting its surroundings selling tasty “pedaâ€, a special milk-based sweet that has become synonymous with the pilgrim town in Jharkhand district in eastern India.
The temple, also known as Baba Baidyanath Dham (an abode of the Lord), is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas - the most sacred abodes of Shiva, worshipped by millions of devotees.
The mouth watering sweets made of milk and jaggery have gone global with the first international consignment shipped out of Deoghar.
Vinita Sudhansu, the deputy general manager of the Government of India’s apex agri-export promotion body - Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) – said it was indeed a proud moment for the people of Deoghar that Baidyanath Dham pedas are now available globally.
Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri said he had sent a sample of 2 kg peda to Bahrain in May this year through Jharkhand Co-operative Milk Federation in view of reports that people in far off Gulf countries like Bahrain and Kuwait go gaga over the delicious sweet.
After peda fulfilled all required parameters in various quality tests, the first international consignment of 32 kg of the sweet was exported to Bahrain via Kolkata on October 20.
The sweetmeat has now been given a license for sale in the international market. It is also eying the Geographical Indication tag and it is likely that its unique identity will be recognised soon.
ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਵਿੱਚ 11 ਨਵੰਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੈਟਰਨਜ਼ ਡੇ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ 'ਤੇ ਕਈ ਭਾਰਤੀ-ਅਮਰੀਕੀ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵੈਟਰਨਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਂਜਲੀ ਭੇਟ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਲਾਈ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਯਤਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖਣ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਕਲਪ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਹਰਾਇਆ।
ਨਿਊਯਾਰਕ ਅਸੈਂਬਲੀਵੂਮੈਨ ਜੈਨੀਫਰ ਰਾਜਕੁਮਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਇਸ ਵੈਟਰਨਜ਼ ਡੇਅ 'ਤੇ, ਮੈਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਦਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਜੋ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੀ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੋਈ।" ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਮੁੱਖ ਬਿੱਲ (A4751A) ਹੁਣ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਤਹਿਤ ਅਪਾਹਜ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੌਕੇ ਵਧਾਏ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਇਹ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਨਿਊਯਾਰਕ ਡਿਪਾਰਟਮੈਂਟ ਆਫ਼ ਵੈਟਰਨਜ਼ ਸਰਵਿਸਿਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਰੁਜ਼ਗਾਰ ਪੋਰਟਲ ਨੂੰ ਅਪਡੇਟ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਆਸਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਹੁੰਚਯੋਗ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ।
ਰਾਜਕੁਮਾਰ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਖੁਲਾਸਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਅਮਰੀਕਨ ਲੀਜਨ ਵੁੱਡਹੈਵਨ ਪੋਸਟ 118 ਅਤੇ ਗਲੈਂਡੇਲ ਅਮਰੀਕਨ ਲੀਜਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਆਯੋਜਿਤ ਸਮਾਗਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਦਿਨ ਦਾ ਜਸ਼ਨ ਮਨਾਇਆ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ,"ਵੈਟਰਨਜ਼ ਅਫੇਅਰਜ਼ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੀ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਤੇ, ਮੈਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਲਈ ਲੜਾਂਗੀ।"
ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ ਦੀ ਕਾਂਗਰਸਵੂਮੈਨ ਪ੍ਰਮਿਲਾ ਜੈਪਾਲ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ,"ਵੈਟਰਨਜ਼ ਡੇਅ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਦਿਨ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਦਰਾਂ-ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀਆਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਸਾਡੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ।"
ਇਲੀਨੋਇਸ ਦੇ ਕਾਂਗਰਸਮੈਨ ਰਾਜਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾਮੂਰਤੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ,"ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਅਮਰੀਕੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਲਈ ਧੰਨਵਾਦੀ ਹਾਂ।"
ਕੈਲੀਫੋਰਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਂਗਰਸਮੈਨ ਰੋ ਖੰਨਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਝਲਕਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ,"ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੁਜ਼ਗਾਰ, ਕਿਫਾਇਤੀ ਰਿਹਾਇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਸਿਹਤ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।"
ਕਾਂਗਰਸਮੈਨ ਅਮੀ ਬੇਰਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਸੈਕਰਾਮੈਂਟੋ ਕਾਉਂਟੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਕੋਨੇ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਲੀਦਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਲਈ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦੀ ਰਹਾਂਗੇ।"
ਵੈਟਰਨਜ਼ ਡੇਅ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਯੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ। ਜੰਗਬੰਦੀ 11 ਨਵੰਬਰ, 1918 ਨੂੰ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ 1919 ਵਿੱਚ, ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਜ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਨੇ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਜੰਗਬੰਦੀ ਦਿਵਸ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਨਾਉਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਸਨੂੰ 1938 ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਛੁੱਟੀ ਘੋਸ਼ਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ 1954 ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਰੇ ਅਮਰੀਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਲਈ "ਵੈਟਰਨਜ਼ ਡੇਅ" ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਅਮੀ ਬੇਰਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ , "ਅੱਜ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਦਿਨ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਦਿਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਸਮਾਰੋਹਾਂ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਬਲਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਲਾਈ ਲਈ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ਯਤਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।"
