C R Rao wins International Prize in Statistics
The professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo has received the Padma Bhushan in 1968 and Padma Vibhushan in 2001.

Indian-American statistician Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, has been awarded the 2023 International Prize in Statistics, a statistics award equivalent to the Nobel Prize. The 102-year-old professor who has worked for more than 75 years continues to exert a profound influence on science, the press statement said.
“In awarding this prize, we celebrate the monumental work by C R Rao that not only revolutionized statistical thinking in its time but also continues to exert enormous influence on human understanding of science across a wide spectrum of disciplines,†Guy Nason, chair of the International Prize in Statistics Foundation said. Rao will receive US$80,000 as part of his award in July at the biennial International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
"In his remarkable 1945 paper published in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society, Rao demonstrated three fundamental results that paved the way for the modern field of statistics and provided statistical tools heavily used in science today," the Institute of Mathematical Statistics said in its statement.
Born in Karnataka, Rao completed MSc in Mathematics at Andhra University in 1941, an MA in statistics from Calcutta University in 1943, and a PhD at King's College in Cambridge University in 1948. Cambridge then awarded him with an ScD degree in 1965. Additionally Rao has received honorary doctoral degrees from universities in 18 countries. He is also an author and the founder of the Indian Econometric Society (IES) and the Indian Society for Medical Statistics (ISMS).
The International Prize in Statistics is awarded every two years by five leading international statistics organizations, recognizing the accomplishments of an individual or team in the statistics field or original ideas that led to practical applications and breakthroughs in other disciplines. The first International Prize in Statistics was awarded in 2017 to David R Cox for the development of the Cox proportional hazards model.

યુનિવર્સિટીએ તેમની પ્રારંભિક શૈક્ષણિક સિદ્ધિઓ, નાનકડા પારિવારિક વ્યવસાય વિનમાર ઇન્ટરનેશનલને વૈશ્વિક પેટ્રોકેમિકલ્સ કંપની તરીકે વિકસાવવામાં મહત્વની ભૂમિકા તેમજ શિક્ષણ, સંશોધન અને સમુદાયિક કાર્યો માટે સતત ટેકો આપવાની વાત ખાસ પ્રકાશિત કરી છે.
૧૯૮૧માં કેમિકલ એન્જિનિયરિંગમાં બીએસની ડિગ્રી મેળવનાર હેમંત ગોરડિયાએ ચાર દાયકા કરતાં વધુ સમય પહેલાં ન્યૂયોર્કમાં પોતાના પારિવારિક નાના વેપારમાં જોડાયા હતા. સમય જતાં તેમણે વિનમારને આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય કંપની બનાવી અને બે દાયકા સુધી સીઇઓ તરીકે સેવા આપી, ત્યારબાદ રોકાણ અને બિન-નફાકારક ક્ષેત્રે નેતૃત્વ સંભાળ્યું.
હાલ તેઓ ગેલોગ્લી કોલેજ ઓફ એન્જિનિયરિંગના બોર્ડ ઓફ વિઝિટર્સમાં સભ્ય તરીકે યુનિવર્સિટીને શૈક્ષણિક કાર્યક્રમો, સંશોધન પ્રાથમિકતાઓ અને વિદ્યાર્થી વિકાસ અંગે વ્યૂહાત્મક સલાહ આપી રહ્યા છે.
પત્ની ઇન્દ્રાણી ગોરડિયા સાથે મળીને તેમણે ટેક્સાસ ચિલ્ડ્રન્સ હોસ્પિટલ કેન્સર સેન્ટરમાં સંશોધન ફેલોશિપ સ્થાપી છે અને OUના અનેક એન્જિનિયરિંગ તેમજ શિક્ષણ કાર્યક્રમોને ટેકો આપ્યો છે.
પ્રથમ USA દ્વારા ભારતમાં વંચિત બાળકો માટે સાક્ષરતા કાર્યક્રમોને પ્રોત્સાહન આપીને લાખો બાળકો સુધી શિક્ષણની પહોંચ વધારવામાં પણ તેમનું મહત્વનું યોગદાન છે.
સમારોહમાં સાર્વજનિક સેવા, વ્યવસાય અને ટેક્નોલોજી ક્ષેત્રે યોગદાન આપનાર અન્ય સાત ભૂતપૂર્વ વિદ્યાર્થીઓને પણ સન્માનિત કરાયા હતા. યુનિવર્સિટી અધિકારીઓએ આ તમામ સન્માનિત વ્યક્તિઓના કાર્યને OUની વિવિધ ક્ષેત્રો, સમુદાયો અને વૈશ્વિક નેટવર્ક પર લાંબા ગાળાના પ્રભાવના પુરાવા તરીકે રજૂ કર્યા છે.
